Not Sure Who to Refer To? A Simple Guide for SLP, OT, and Social Work (+ Free Download)

Filed in Our Team — April 15, 2026

Knowing where to refer a patient, student, or client can feel overwhelming, especially when needs overlap across communication, daily function, and emotional well-being.

At iRehab Services, we believe referrals should feel clear, collaborative, and functional, not complicated.

That’s why we created a FREE, easy-to-use Referral Guide to help you quickly determine whether someone may benefit from speech therapy, occupational therapy, social work, or a combination of services.

How to Know Where to Refer

A helpful starting point is identifying the primary area of concern:

  • Communication, cognition, or swallowing → Speech Therapy
  • Daily tasks, motor skills, or sensory needs → Occupational Therapy
  • Emotional, behavioral, or adjustment needs → Social Work

Of course, many individuals don’t fit neatly into one category, and that’s okay.

When to Consider Each Service

Speech Therapy (SLP)

Consider a referral if you notice:

  • Difficulty speaking or being understood
  • Word-finding or memory challenges
  • Trouble following directions
  • Cognitive changes after brain injury or stroke
  • Swallowing concerns or coughing during meals
  • Voice changes

Occupational Therapy (OT)

Consider a referral if you notice:

  • Difficulty with daily tasks (dressing, cooking, hygiene)
  • Fine motor challenges (writing, using tools)
  • Weakness or coordination difficulties
  • Sensory sensitivities or regulation challenges
  • Attention or visual-perceptual concerns
  • Safety concerns at home or in the community

Social Work (SW)

Consider a referral if you notice:

  • Difficulty coping with injury or diagnosis
  • Emotional or behavioral concerns
  • Caregiver stress or burnout
  • Difficulty adjusting to life changes
  • Psychological barriers impacting follow-through or engagement

Many Individuals Benefit from a Team Approach

Some conditions are best supported with multiple disciplines working together. For example:

  • Brain injury → Speech + OT + Social Work
  • Stroke → Speech + OT
  • Work-related injury → OT + Social Work

A collaborative approach ensures care is functional, comprehensive, and personalized.
