National Concussion Awareness Day: Rebuilding Skills for Everyday Life

A concussion can happen in an instant — on the field, at work, in the car, or even from a simple fall. While it’s called a “mild” traumatic brain injury (mTBI), the effects can interfere with nearly every part of life.

Headaches, dizziness, and brain fog are common, but so are challenges with memory, attention, organization, and communication. These symptoms don’t just affect how a person feels — they affect how a person functions: keeping up at school, getting through a workday, managing relationships, cooking dinner, managing bills, or even just having a conversation.

The first few days after a concussion are crucial. Resting the brain, avoiding re-injury, and getting a professional evaluation can make a big difference in recovery. But if symptoms linger beyond a week or two, therapy can help retrain the brain and restore independence.
